We discussed Southeast Asia's international relations after reading an article. The IPEF was established in May, during Biden's first trip to Asia as President. Kishida's hard China policy was bolstered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's backing for it.

The item we read focused on Myanmar's de facto leader Min Aung Hlaing's visit to Russia. Myanmar and Russia presented contradictory claims. According to Myanmar state media, Min Aung Hlaing met with Russian officials and others to address crucial issues. The Russian Defense Ministry, on the other side, stressed that his visit was personal. However, it is unlikely that Myanmar's de facto supreme commander would conduct a personal visit to Russia, which is a staunch backer of the junta. Instead, he was most likely looking to break out of international isolation.

The item we read together was on U.S. Secretary of State Blinken's travel to Bali and Bangkok. He criticized ASEAN nations for being unwilling to take action against Myanmar's administration. He was also worried about China's increasing influence in Southeast Asia, a crucial region of competitiveness for the U.S. with China.
