 Many people in the U.S. resist wearing masks during the pandemic. An idea that seems so simple and good in Japan rubs many Americans the wrong way. Why is the response so strong and what does it tell us about Americans culture? This is what some people there are saying about masks:
"They`re uncool". In a widely reported survey, men in particular indicated that face masks are shameful," "not cool," and "a sign of weakness." In other words, it`s unmanly to wear them. When people do, they want them to be cool or fashionable. Women tend to use pretty fabrics, and even a guy at the grocery store was with a tiger mask.
"They`re un-American." Freedom is obviously a big deal in the U.S. People don`t want to be told what to do. Their president won`t wear a mask, and a lot of his supporters believe it`s patriotic to follow his lead.
"God will protect me." The U.S. is a strongly Christian country, as most people know. Some Christians believe their faith in God will keep them safe. In Texas, the governor designated churches as "essential," so they`re free to open and hold services. A church on Sunday at the height of the pandemic in the community, a large number of people were entering, many of them elderly, and not one person had a mask on.
These are just a few reasons American people give for not covering their faces in public. There are other more complicated ones related to race and American history. But the good news is a lot of people are on board with wearing masks. As one puts it, "We need to care for each other."
